Rise, run, and drainage are what separate steps you stop noticing from steps you brace for. We build stone, paver, and timber stairs that stay level and stay safe through Northland winters.

"Miller Creek installed pavers, bluestone steps, and flagstones to tie our driveway, walkway, and deck together. They exceeded our expectations in almost every way. The final installation was magazine-worthy. My only regret is that I didn't hire them a decade ago."

Steps are one of the few landscape elements where a half-inch mistake is something you feel underfoot. Every type below gets the same attention to rise, run, and base.
The approach to your door, built to the right proportion and finished to match the house rather than fight it.
Solid bluestone and granite treads set on compacted base — the most durable step there is, and the best looking.
Modular block and paver stairs that tie cleanly into adjacent walls, patios, and walkways.
Long stair runs down to the water, with landings, handrail provisions, and erosion control built into the design.
Treated timber stairs for wooded and rustic sites where a lighter footprint suits the setting.
Resetting heaved, settled, or uneven treads — and fixing the base or drainage that caused it.
When a flight of stairs goes out of plane, it's rarely the stone that failed. Water sat under the treads, froze, and lifted them. Getting steps right is mostly about what happens before the first tread is set.
A half-inch inconsistency between treads is enough to catch a toe, and it's the most common defect we're called out to fix. We lay out every flight so the rise is uniform from bottom to top and the run is deep enough to take a full foot.
Below that, treads are set on compacted aggregate carried below frost influence, with drainage so meltwater moves through instead of pooling and lifting. Stone is pinned or set in place so individual treads stay put under load.
Steps get walked every single day, in the dark and in the ice. That makes material choice a safety decision as much as an aesthetic one — surface texture, tread depth, and where the light falls all matter more here than anywhere else on the property.
We design steps together with the walls they cut through, the walkway they meet, and the lighting that makes them usable after dark. Handled as one detail, a flight of stairs stops being a transition and becomes the best-looking element on the property.
